Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie has called for the introduction of VAR in South African football.

This comes after match officials disallowed kaizer chiefs’ late goal against Mamelodi Sundowns. It appeared as if Amakhosi had found the equaliser but the referee had already blown his whistle for the foul that was committed on defender Mosa Lebusa.

In the end, Kaizer Chiefs suffered a 2-1 defeat in a Betway Premiership encounter on Saturday afternoon at the FNB Stadium. Gayton, who took over as sports minister, called for VAR to be implemented in the Premier Soccer League(PSL) after the match.

“All football-loving fans know that the time for VAR has arrived in SA football. We need VAR & we need it now, those meetings start now because we are not a 10th-world country. I shall report back soonest after meeting SAFA & the PSL this week,” McKenzie said in a tweet.

Former Economic Freedom Fighters deputy president Floyd Shivambu was also critical of the refereeing on Saturday.

“We went to watch the terrible officiated match between KaizerChiefs and Sundowns yesterday. Amakhosi will be the most dominant team this season, and SAFA has to intervene decisively with reckless referees because it’s not good for football,” he said.

Just like Gayton, Kaizer Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi also called for VAR to be implemented in the PSL.

“I’m surprised in South Africa we don’t work with VAR – it’s impossible in Morocco, Tunisia, in North Africa,” he said.
