kaizer chiefs weren’t the most entertaining side last season but 2024-2025 already shows signs of huge improvement. Here’s why.
The 2023-2024 season in a nutshell
Chiefs were woeful in front of goal last term, managing only 25 goals in 30 outings. With a tally of 30 in the ‘goals against’ column, their matches produced a total of 55 goals, an average of fewer than two a game. You’d understand why some fans felt a little shortchanged.
New Kaizer Chiefs defensive base means more fluency, but…
There will be teething issues with an almost entirely brand-new defensive unit, but Inacio Miguel, Rushwin Dortley and Bradley Cross have impressed and settled quickly. 22-year-old Dortley in particular should go to the top of South African football. Chiefs are certainly more of an entertaining watch so far this season compared to 2023-2024. All three of their matches this season have featured goals at both ends, although Nabi will want his side to start picking up clean sheets. That’s the next step. Of course, a prolific striker would be nice too, although Ranga Chivaviro’s start to the season has been promising. The former Gallants man battled in his debut campaign with Chiefs, but he’s got goals in back-to-back games this term, including an early strike against Sundowns. Chiefs are averaging two goals scored per game and Ranga is doing his job for now.
Nabi asks his scouting network to cast their net to South America
According to The Citizen, Nasreddine Nabi has told his scouts to take their operations to South America to find a reliable goal-scorer.
“Chiefs are still much in the hunt for a new striker. Some agents from the African continent have offered their players to the club, but coach [Nasreddine] Nabi is specific about the type of striker he wants for the club. That’s why Chiefs have widened their search for a striker to other parts of Africa and South America,” said the source.
Next three fixtures for Amakhosi
Meanwhile, Amakhosi have a few interesting tests on the horizon although they must wait 22 days until they’re next in action. Nabi has plenty of work to do, but also many reasons to be optimistic about the tests ahead despite defeat to Sundowns.
