Motaung Jr rubbishes rumours on hot Kaizer Chiefs target

kaizer chiefs Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr again rubbished claims that the club tapped up one of their rumoured marquee targets.

Motaung Jr says the club didn’t ‘tap up’ Velebayi

Earlier this month, the Chiefs Sporting Director outright refuted reports that the club had directly contacted Asanele Velebayi’s parents to engineer a move for the winger. Velebayi, still only 21, was the name on everyone’s lips during the recent winter transfer window. Spurs CEO Ari Efstathiou valued the player around R12 million, while Amakhosi’s reported offer was closer to R5 million.

A famous European example of a similar controversial ‘tapping up’ situation occurred in 2009 when Man United allegedly paid Paul Pogba’s parents a significant chunk of cash to secure a move for the then-16-year-old midfielder from Le Havre. Via The Guardian:

“The controversy over Manchester United’s signing of the 16-year-old French midfielder Paul Pogba has taken a fresh twist, amid claims that the player’s parents were given €100,000 (£87,000) each, and a house, to bring him to Old Trafford.”

Kaizer Chiefs get encouragement in Velebayi chase

Fast forward a few weeks and Velebayi’s agent Lance Davids has weighed in on the player’s immediate future.

Cape Town Spurs head coach Ernst Middendorp dug his heels in during the winter window despite intense interest in Asanele Velebayi from Chiefs. The 21-year-old’s agent Lance Davids, however, has given Amakhosi some encouragement. This via SoccerLaduma:

“Of course when the next window comes up in the next three, or four months, we will try our best. Of course, if Chiefs are interested like I said, I hope the player will be the same value, even more, but I hope the deal can happen because he’s a fantastic player,” Davids said on Metro FM Sports.

“Spurs said that’s not the value [on transfer deadline day]. The boy also spoke to the coach [Middendorp] and the coach also said that’s not the value that they wanted.
