Kaizer Chiefs’ package offer for giant striker isn’t good enough

kaizer chiefs have initiated plans to sign several attackers in January but one of their marquee targets seems well out of reach.

Chiefs likely to walk away from a deal for Olunga

30-year-old Michael Olunga bagged a hat-trick in the first match of this season’s Qatar Stars League. In his entire club career, he’s scored a stunning tally of 190 goals in 253 matches. In his last 61 league matches in Qatar, he’s scored a ludicrous 62 goals. No matter who you’re playing for, a scoring rate of more than a goal per game is absurd.

Experience aplenty

Olunga has played for Kenyan giants Gor Mahia, Swedish side Djurgardens, Spanish LaLiga’s Girona, Chinese outfit Hengfeng, Kashiwa Reysol from Japan’s J-League and Qatari club Al-Duhail SC. To say he’s Kenya’s greatest is probably an understatement, but perhaps brother duo Victor Wanyama and McDonald Mariga would like a word. Chiefs are considering an ambitious move for the man valued at R115 million, but his wage demands and signing-on fee will likely be prohibitive. At that transfer value, Chiefs will be priced out of a deal.

Maybe a move to the PSL isn’t totally out of the question

The 30-year-old is settled with Qatar Pro Stars League leaders Al Duhail but if he were to move, a switch to another Gulf club looks highly likely. Teams in that area aren’t all that concerned about money. If Olunga fancies himself as a Betway Premiership striker when he’s in his late 30s, then local clubs would have a greater chance of securing his signature.

Carling Knockout quarter-final draw pits Kaizer Chiefs against Sundowns

Chiefs, Magesi, Richards Bay, and Marumo Gallants were in the unseeded pot. Meanwhile, Sundowns, Cape Town City, TS Galaxy and Stellenbosch were the seeded sides after finishing in the top eight last season. Amakhosi knew they were getting a seeded opponent and got the most difficult task on paper. However, if they can get past the Brazilians they’ll quietly fancy their chances of going all the way. Here’s the full draw with the holders Stellenbosch travelling to Limpopo to face Marumo Gallants.
